My friend Witt Wisebraum from Hampshire is back because a bunch of his friends have performances this week, and we just got to talking about what he has been doing in Atlanta, Georgia in terms of a non-profit (Wonder Root www.myspace.com/wonderroot) he and some friends started that promotes art and music in communities. He mentioned how they were looking for space, and were considering churches, and then I remembered an article that was posted on infoshop today, which is highly relevant. The article itself was really interesting and I think suggests a lot of possibilities for organizing in communities. I’m reposting the article here too, for your reading pleasure.
It was good to hear about things going on in the South. He also told me there was a cool bike/infoish shop in Atlanta. Then Ada said that Alea was going to Atlanta for spring break … so maybe I’ll get to go. Have to visit the South in the Spring or else I go crazy. Read the rest of this entry »

France – More than 80 police officers were injured, five of whom are in critical condition, after two nights of anti-police rioting in the Parisian suburb of Villiers-le-Bel. Now authorities are trying to cope with a third consecutive night of unrest. Trouble broke out following the death of two youths who died in a automobile accident with a police car. The two were riding a motor-bike at the time and police fled the scene of the wreck. By the second night, violence had spread to 6 more towns in the Parisian suburbs and has now flared up in the southern city of Toulouse.

So, I’ve been wondering about this phenomena of people wanting something that they were preventing from having for a long time, and because they were prevented from having it, they now want it regardless of the potential harmful parts about it. I think there must be some name for this phenomena, but I don’t know what it is. Read the rest of this entry »

I’ve been looking to find zines written by straight edge people or just about reasons for not drinking/smoking/doing drugs. I really really like it when these issues are discussed in anarchist circles. I wish there was more crossover between the straight edge scene and the anarchist scene. A lot of straight edge kids are mainstream politically (or even conservative- like the anti-abortion hardcore kids) and I think that turns a lot of anarchists off of the idea of straightedge. On Friday (the 16th) I went to a Demo against Bank of America organized by one of my friends and some people from VCU. We were protesting the way that BOA claims to be working for the environment and against global warming, and yet put their money in the hands of many energy and coal companies which are building new coal plants as well as participating in mountain top removal. Essentially, they are ruining the environment, participating in the destruction of the appalachain mountains and the communities in those areas- and putting all of those people at risk. Companies like Massey Energy are well known for their violations of the not very effective environmental laws in place in this country. We had some really good fliers, 2 big banners, and about 15 of us. We stood outside the downtown bank and handed out the fliers and talked to people. It was a totally legal action, and we did not have any trouble from the police. I think it was effective, just in that we got the idea on more people’s minds. I closed my BOA account because of their policies (something I’ve been meaning to do for some time). richmondfall2007-038.jpg

I went to Plan 9 records and Chop Suey books today, and both places allowed me to put my zine Cuddle Puddles and Hot Pants on consignment there. It will be 2.50 at Plan 9 at 2 bux at Chop Suey. All profits from the zine and my distro, Approaching Apocalypse, go to Richmond Food Not Bombs. So if you are in Richmond, check out my zine! Fools…
I was really happy that these places still let people sell zines. Oh yea, I also have some for sale at Food For Thought Books and Mixed Nuts in Amherst, MA. I hope people buy em and write me!!!

I am inter, viewing some people tomorrow for my Div 3 and I’m getting nervous now, cause I have never really interviewed people before, and what if I get super awkward? That would suck. I’m going to work on my questions tonight and tomorrow morning. I hope it goes well…if not I’ll have to pester them again. What I like is that these activists have seemed really happy and helpful, instead of put off and pretentious. That is really exciting. I just hope they don’t think I’m a flippin moron. I need to turn on my eloquent and well-thought button tomorrow.
