Anti-Death Penalty sign making at craft night

18 Aug

Come on out to the Wingnut Anarchist Collective to make signs/banners for the anti-death penalty protest the next day.

Virginia is planning to execute Teresa Lewis on September 23rd. The Anarchist Black Cross is planning a protest on September 23rd from 4-6 at 1111 West Broad Street. We will also be going to the Greenville Correctional Facility where they execute people in order to have a presence there.

If you want to come to either part of the protest, this craft night the night before will be a good chance to make signs that have messages that you would feel comfortable holding. For instance, I personally have no interest in holding signs that advocate for longer prison sentences as alternatives to the death penalty. But there are certainly lots of people who are ok with that and will hold those signs. Making a custom sign helps ensure you will feel comfortable and confident with your message at a protest.

If you want to come and work on other crafts as usual with craft night, that is totally fine too!

May 19th: Virginia Death Penalty

19 May

The Death Penalty is just one of the many ways in which the State participates in the murder of people. Virginia has the second highest Death penalty rate in the United States. Virginia has murdered 106 people by the death penalty. Tomorrow is the date scheduled for the next state sanctioned murder. Details on that particular case are below.

HELP STOP VIRGINIA’S 107th EXECUTION – May 20, 2010

In September, 1998, Darick Demorris Walker was sentenced to death for the capital murders of Stanley Roger Beale and Clarence Threat. Beale was killed in November, 1996 and Threat in June, 1997.  It is important that the Governor continue to hear from you that you oppose the execution of Darick Walker.  Please take a few minutes to say “NO” to executions and help us stop the cycle of violence that state sanctioned killing perpetuates.

Please take one or more of the following actions:

1. Contact Virginia Governor Bob McDonnell TODAY and ask him to stop the execution

2. Forward this and ask people you know to also contact Governor McDonnell

3. Attend a vigil on May 20th

May 4: Kent State Massacre

4 May

On May 4th, 40 years ago (1970), students at the Kent State University in Ohio had been protesting since the April 30th announcement by Nixon that the US was invading Cambodia. This move was seen by many as an escalation of the Vietnam War. Due to the previous days of protests, unrest, and riot the Mayor of Kent had declared an emergency and obtained Ohio National Guard soldiers.

On the morning of May 4th, there were approximately 77 National Guard members on the campus of Kent State University. Students were having a protest, and the guards decided that it needed to be stopped. The National Guard troops advanced on the students with bayonets, guns, and teargas, forcing them to relocate. As this was happening students would be pushed away and some would try to return to their position. Continue reading

HELP STOP VIRGINIA’S 103rd EXECUTION – February 19th, 2009

2009 does not need to be another banner year for Virginia Executions- we can all help stop them.

There will be a protest on Broad Street in Richmond on Thursday February 19th from 4-6 p.m. at the intersection of Broad and 11th (outside of the Governor’s office). Please come help show that Virginians are not for the Death Penalty. We will have some signs but feel free to bring your own. Bring your phones too so we can call the Governor’s office to ask him to stop the execution.

If the sentence is not commuted, there will also be a vigil outside of the prison where the execution is taking place that night. Details are at the bottom of this article.

Edward Nathaniel Bell is scheduled to be killed by the Commonwealth of Virginia at 9 p.m. on February 19th, 2009 for the shooting death of Sgt. Ricky L. Timbrook, 32, from the Winchester police Department during a late evening police chase on Oct. 29, 1999.

At a time when most of the country is turning away from the death penalty, Virginia has already scheduled her first execution of 2009. We are second only to Texas in the number of prisoners killed, and if this scheduled execution isn’t halted, Bell will be the 103rd person killed by the Commonwealth since 1977. Please take a few minutes to say “Enough!” and help us fix this broken system.

Please take one or more of the following actions – Details below: Continue reading
